Stansted Park

Stansted Park is a 520 ha grade II* registered park which contains many surviving features of the medieval Stansted Forest. ACTA prepared a survey, repair and management plan which will be the basis for a Higher Level Stewardship application to Natural England.

The following work was undertaken;
assessment of landscape character
history and development of the park and Stansted Forest
tree survey
woodland edge survey and woodland management
planting plans
schedule of works
restoration and management proposals, including arable reversion, new planting and restoration of ornamental buildings.

ACTA’s work demonstrated the continuity of the park and its boundaries since the late medieval period. Advised by the Capability Brown expert John Phibbs, ACTA identified Brown’s probable contribution to the landscape. Proposals took account of the long and continuing tradition of woodland management at Stansted and its present-day business enterprises.

Other conservation and management plans:
Scotney Park Estate
Firle Estate
Parham Park

It was possible to interpret the map evidence to give an understanding of the landscape design in
Capability Brown’s time

Stansted House was rebuilt in the 1900s but occupies the same site as the seventeenth-century house and
remains the focal point in many designed views across the park
